During his time at Cook County Hospital, he served as the Chief Resident, as well as being nominated on the Clinician Scientist Tract. Some of the early prestigious awards that Dr. Datta won include the Sigma Xi award, the Midwest Anesthesia Conference Research award, as well as the prestigious award for “Best of the Meeting- Scientific Abstracts”, International Anesthesia Research Society. Dr. Sukdeb Datta is a Diplomat, American Board of Anesthesiology and Diplomat, American Board of Pain Medicine. He has additionally acquired the Subspecialty Certification in Pain Management awarded by the joint Boards of the American Board of Anesthesiology, American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also certified by the World Institute of Pain as F.I.P.P. (Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice) and the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians as a D.A.B.I.P.P. (Diplomat, American Board of Interventional Pain Practice). He has been very active on international, national and local levels in promoting pain medicine. He has been nominated on the Faculty 1000 medicine, an international panel of Pain experts evaluating critical articles on Pain Management.

Relevant Experience:

Dr. Sukdeb Datta served as the Director, Interventional Pain Management Program, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Vanderbilt University Medical School, Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. He also served as the Division Chief, Pain Medicine Division within the Department of Anesthesiology and the Program Director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt University is consistently ranked as one of the top academic institutions in the United States.

Dr. Datta’s clinical interests have been wide ranging and focused on finding innovative solutions to complex clinical problems associated with chronic pain and spine issues. He believes in constantly evolving and intellectually advancing the field by incorporating the best clinical research and practice using the appropriate evidence based approach and at the same time incorporating the best in translational pain research. This “bench to bedside” approach has led to him being recognized as a thought leader in both these fields. Ultimately, this approach puts the patient in the center, with the use of best available use of technology backed up with the most advanced and forward thinking use of basic science research to create comprehensive solutions for complex problems.

Dr. Sukdeb Datta is an Associate editor of the Pain Physician journal and on the editorial board of the Frontiers in Pain Pharmacology and Therapeutics journal. He has been an invited guest reviewer to journals such as Anesthesiology, Spine, Pain Practice, The Journal of Pain, Pain Medicine and Pain. He has contributed several book chapters to various books and also been interested in evidence based guidelines. Considering his deep interest in evidence based medicine, he is recognized as a national leader in formulating guidelines in Interventional Pain Management and has widely published on these issues.

He has been invited as Grand Rounds speaker at premier institutes such Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Hospital for Special Surgery and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital for Cancer in New York.

Dr. Datta has been listed on the Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America (2002-present), Who’s Who in Science and Engineering (2002-present), Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare (2003-2010); Princeton Premier (2009-2010) and as an Outstanding Young Man of America (1998).

He has an active interest in translational pain research and his past funded research grant looked at new treatments based on potential mechanisms of neuropathic pain. Increased understanding of the complex interaction between different mechanisms that underlie neuropathic pain is “sorely” needed in order to develop effective new therapies for neuropathic disorders. The superficial dorsal horn (SDH) of the spinal cord is a key region in the neural system subserving nociception, the presumed site of “gating” mechanisms that regulate sensitivity to noxious stimuli, and therefore, is one of the key sites for studies aimed at developing new treatments for neuropathic pain. His research focused on detailed anatomic studies of different markers of neuropathic pain in the SDH like morphine, cholecystokinin, neurokinin and neuropeptide Y in both normal and neuropathic rats and complex modeling of clinical human neuropathic pain. His funded clinical research interests include therapies for opioid induced bowel dysfunction, correlation of autonomic dysfunction and spinal cord stimulation and the role of pain management techniques in the management of epidural scar tissue formation.

To complement his clinical, research and academic activities, Dr. Datta is a well recognized and respected national teacher and educator. Dr. Datta has been invited to serve as faculty at numerous cadaver workshops to demonstrate advanced techniques in interventional pain management by prestigious societies like the American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He has moderated several scientific sessions in the meetings of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia.

Dr. Aditya Patel, MD

Interventional Pain Management Specialist

Aditya Patel M.D. is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, with additional subspecialty fellowship training and board certification in Interventional Pain Medicine. He completed his Residency Training in Anesthesiology at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston New Jersey. From the beginning of his training he developed a special interest in both acute and chronic pain management, and had the special opportunity to work closely with the highly qualified pain management specialists at SBMC throughout his residency training. He quickly developed an ability to connect with patients and recognized its importance in developing a strong physician-patient relationship.

Dr. Patel completed in undergraduate training at the University of California, San Diego. There he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience. After completing his undergraduate training, Dr. Patel was accepted to the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada West Indies. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned his Medical Degree in 2006. Upon completion of his Medical School Education, Dr. Patel pursued a Research Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He worked in a basic science laboratory in the Department if Anesthesiology on a project studying the effects of hypoxia on programmed cell death or apoptosis. The work to which he contributed was published in an article in Current Biology.

In 2007 Dr. Patel began his Residency training in Anesthesiology where he served as Chief Resident in Anesthesiology during his final year. Upon completion of his residency training, Dr. Patel began his fellowship training in Pain Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. During his time there, he was fortunate to learn from a diverse group of leading physicians in the field of Pain Medicine, as well as with leaders in Hospice care, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. While at Mount Sinai, Dr. Patel was trained in many of the most innovative and advanced therapies established in the field of Pain Medicine.

After finishing his Fellowship training, Dr. Patel began working as an Anesthesiologist at the Mount Sinai Brooklyn Hospital in Midwood Brooklyn. There he worked closely with Surgeons specializing in General, Thoracic, Spine, and Orthopedic Surgery. He developed protocols for acute postoperative pain management for both ambulatory and inpatient procedures. Dr. Patel offered specialized therapies for acute postoperative pain management through the use of ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. In addition, Dr. Patel has had experience as a leader in the Department of Anesthesiology at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.

Dr Patel brings a natural empathy to the treatment of complex pain management and spine care. He is highly enthusiastic in employing the skills he has been able to obtain throughout his unique and highly specialized training in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. With his new position at Datta Endoscopic Back Surgery and Pain Center, Dr. Patel will be able to serve the needs of a wide variety of people distributed all across the tristate locations in New Jersey, Upstate New York, Manhattan , Bronx and Long Island.
